I put a rather long thread on the Message Board. Should really have gone on here but was interested to see how many people might or might not comment on the matter. Unfortunately I have thrown my RP copy away but did read an article in which I believe it's the BHB are going to discuss whether or not remounting fallen horses should be banned.

In show jumping any rider who falls off or a horse falls - they are automatically eliminated from the contest, think that covers three day eventing too. It's a subject that could be touchy. A lot of the old school trainers might be up in arms - remember the furore when they made Aintree safer But in the interest of the horses' welfare I do hope this ban does come into force.

Your opinions please ....

Fav on flat all time has to be flying grey sprinter from late 70's early 80's Standaan loved him to bits. Close on his tail 2 others from the 70's smart juvinile filly Pasy and run ofthe mill handicapper Senator Sam (yep both grey too). Jumper Zip Fastner another grey not a real star but won a Victor Lu Dorum amongst other races in the mid to late 70's. 2 other jumpers I loved Grey Sombrero cried buckets whn I found out he was killed in the 73 National and in the late 70's early 80's again yet another grey Atlantic Bridge again no great shakes but a real fav all the same.

Watched him at Sandown again last Saturday. Once again he didn't perform with his usual

verve and Ruby pulled up on the second circuit at the railway fences. Before hand I was at

the parade ring and he didn't look "bouncy" as he usually does. One girl was leading him

round. I remember when it took two men to lead him up! Understand Ruby reported he

had breathing problems. Just got to hope it's nothing too serious.

Sorry. I originally put this under the wrong topic so will repeat here. Has anyone heard how Distinction is doing? I do hope I have the right name, she ran for Mark Johnson and had a very awkward action in front. I thought she was retired to stud but have heard and read nothing.

My favourite racehorse is One Man and I cried my eyes out when he died. Went to the Arc last year and Zarkava was just out of this world!

Mighty Man is set to run in the World Hurdle ,without a prep run, or the Aintree Hurdle. He has been given stem cell treatment and is now back cantering. I don't know what anyone else thinks but this seems a big ask for a horse that is having his first run in nearly 2 years and after such a serious injury.

Must admit I read the news differently. It says to me that Denman's racing career is coming to an end, whether as a result of the heart condition or poor performances on his return to training. With a few honourable exceptions horses offer very little after running creditably in the National as so Nicholls must realise this could seriously jeopardise his chances for 2010 GC. I think Nicholls does not see him as a GC horse in the future and so is caving in to Harry Findlay's desperate wish to see Denman at Aintree before it's too late. All that said he must be seriously fancied for the National and lets hope he gets round OK.

I'd like to see him not run competitively again, after the scare he had, but that's just cos I'm a worrier.

I am aware that I know nothing about his condition, and what impact it really has on his future safety.

I know that he really is such a talent that it would be a shame to retire him without him fulfilling his destiny.

*BUT* I just hope that nothing ever happens to him to give anyone a chance to say "I told you so"

I guess then that it will come as no surprise that I would be mortified to see him running in the Grand National. The fences should be no problem to him barring outside influences, but the distance, I dunno.

Do you think I could afford to buy him and use him as a hack?

I dont like the idea of Denman going round the national course. his heart murmur of this year I would see what he is like over a shorter trip. Although Paul Nichols knows the horse? We will have to watch this space

I think this great stayer should take his chance in the grand national, yes he is a gold cup winner and you don`t see many gold cup winners jumping the aintree fences, but i think you will see the best of denman around there.

Ode Dukey (Duke of Dollis) brings back fond memories back in the 80's..i used to look after him when Rod Simpson trained him in Epsom and Leatherhead befor moving on to lambourne.. as we all know race horses are highly stung fpr when i remember,,and Dukeof Dollis was like my best buddy back then... if i remember he came 4th or 5th in the 1983 Cesarewitch when Bajan sunshine won (big day that was..if theres anybody that knows his age when he sadley past away i would lkie to hear from you..thanks

Hi there,

Did anyone else feel like he was used a pace maker to Garde Champetre , J T Mcnamara kept looking around for Nina, I feel so disapointent for L'ami as he was in the lead all the way round,I feel he was being held back,watched the race a number of times now, over last few jumps, I really don't think it was a fair race?? (Just for the record I had no bet on either) just sheer disapointment for L'ami. x

Interesting..wonder what they have to hide. Good that he's still with us, but after a year and him still being in a veterinary hospital it makes you wonder what they are doing with him. I fully admit I know nothing about his treatment, so may this may be totally normal, but it does seem odd.

You would have thought that there would be updates on RP at least, what with him being such a popular horse. I hope he's not being used as a guinea pig or anything.

I went for an interview a couple of weeks ago at my local veterinary hospital. Mighty Man was in the stables so is obviously still with us. The lady I was with was very cagey when I asked about him though so I can't give you an update/progress report.

All I asked was if one of the horses in the stables was Mighty Man. The answer was a very wary, hesitant "yes". I got the distinct impression further questions would not be welcome.

It's me again. He didn't perform up to his usual boisterous self at Ascot today. I

am beginning to think that perhaps 3 miles is a bit too far and he should be aimed

at somewhere between 2 and 3, he certainly didn't get the trip at Ascot, never

really got into the race. I understand he had a terrible time at Galway in summer

The Paul Nichols column stated that he didn't travel over very well. Wonder if

he still remembers being brought down in Ireland a year ago - horses do have

exceptional memories, despite what people think.

I have to agree with you there just rereading Richard Burridge's biog The grey Horse about Dessie. He was raced hard but got every summer off. The ground is too hard falling on this is only going to lead to fatal injuries.

Did anyone see the dirty racing programme on bbc yesterday?on panorama,

I dont know how all the people involved got away with it,fergal lynch should not be riding again,neither should darren williams,its clear to me they where been paid for the losers,

And as for keiran fallon,i opened a post last year stating he was a cheat,he is always involved in something dodgy,please dont grant him a license when he trys to come back,its people like all involved on this programme that should be banned from racing/betting etc.Id be interested to hear your comments,thanks

Summer Jumping

Do you remember the good old days when jump horses were able to have a good summer holiday? A couple of months in which to take it nice and easy in the fields then to come back fresh when the new season started? What were those months - end of May/June to September? It seems such a shame that jump racing now continues through our sometimes hot summer and quite often expected to race on sun baked to concrete turf surface. It's upsetting to see so many names being mentioned in these pages - some we know and some are strange to us, probably because they only compete in the lower rank races and aren't generally recognised. All weather jumping stopped because of the unacceptable amount of fatalities and injuries suffered. Surely summer jump racing should be looked at seriously by the Horse Racing Board. They could still end the season immediately after Swinton Hurdle at Haydock and resume in September - I for one would welcome such a move. I feel certain that the mortality rate would drop.

Bobby Socks was my all time favourite i adored him. Also Red Rum and Mill Reef not forgetting my equine buddy Spitefool who wasnt remotely interested in racing and is quite content bouncing around local show grounds with me instead!

Doran's Pride was young enough to have still been kept "active". You hear of old stalwarts accompanying some of the youngsters on the gallops. If Doran's was so miserable (I also saw that article) why was he not employed that way. But perhaps Michael Hourigan learned something from that tragedy and that is why Beef or Salmon might be starting a new career - at least that is what I heard. I believe dressage was mentioned. Let's hope his temperament stands the test and he doesn't boil over with his exuberance.

I was as disgusted as anyone that Doran's Pride met such a sad end, but Michael Hourigan later gave an interview revealing why the horse went back into training. He said that Doran's Pride was utterly miserable standing in his paddock watching the other horses going to the gallops or out on the road. To most people, that does not excuse what happened. No, Doran's Pride did not deserve to end his life like that, but then, what horse does? If, as Michael Hourigan says, the horse was so unhappy, what choice did he have. Sadly, retirement does not suit some horses - just as it doesn't suit human beings. Don't get me wrong. I adored Doran's Pride. He was a fantastic horse, consistent and honest and lovely looking. If he'd gone on to win the race, people would have been happy for him. May he rest in peace, and thanks for the memories. God Bless.

He did well today in the 365 Gold Cup at Sandown! (It'll always be the Whitbread to me!) Pity he was so keen early on, might've kept just that little bit in reserve up that final hill.

Couldnt agree more.Derek Thompson was made to look a liar in the Ramsden/Fallon trial and I always believed him.Fallon is a thug,look what he did to Stuart Webster as a young rider.

The horse he rode at Lingfield was Ballinger ridge .No way was that horse tiring.I will never forget Top Cees being booes at Cheltenham.It wasnt his fault.I hope Fallon never rides professionally again.Also Kirsty "Milkshake" needs her head examined.

Haha, I bet the pundits were eating their pre-race words "past his best" eh? Well he whupped their arses today for sure. I love the old boy. He was always easy to recognise with that giraffe neck and that "dipped nose in tin of emulsion" face. I liked to support him cos I could always pick him out in a field. A well deserved win for one of the old guard.

Visitors to this site might be interested in this "Racehorse Memorial Wall" blog that I came across. There's a slight anti-racing and very American feel about it, but it is interesting and informative, although easy to get lost in!

monkerhostin is one of my fave's too. he is ok after cheltenham. Phillip Hobbs said in the following days RP that he had been checked out by the vet, but found no obvious reason for the poor run.

No such common sense I'm afraid. Tom Dreaper was asked about his Grand National ride on ATR yesterday and is riding Contraband.

"He's got a high rating so he deserves to take his chance" was the attempt to justify it.

Owners like Fergus Wilson make me so angry.They are so lucky toi be in the position to be able to have racehortses but run them into the ground.I think that any horse who runs in a race at Cheltenham should not be allowed to take part in another race during the festival.

I have read that he has entered him in the Grand National.lets hope he sees sense and he doesnt run.This horse deserves better.

Must say I agree, this horse owes nothing to anyone, let him retire as a well happy horse. Its not all about the money or kudos, its about the horse first and foremost. Let him be.
